What base for my sculpture?

Updated over 4 months ago

Do you want to find the best support for your sculpture but don't know what type of base to choose or which professional to turn to? Artsper guides you in selecting the ideal base thanks to its expert advice!

To elegantly display and highlight your sculpture you can use a base. Small or large, metal or glass, we help you choose the presentation that best suits your sculpture.

Choosing a base can be complex. We share our recommendations with you to find the one that will be best suited to your work.

How to choose the best base?

The base is essential for the sculptures to situate them in our visual field. It also makes it possible to delimit a space specific to the work. We must be able to walk around, step back and familiarize ourselves with the entire volume.

In order to define the ideal dimensions you need to know what type of sculpture will be placed on the base. Regarding its height, it is necessary to know where it will be placed. It is recommended to have a base that is wider than the base of your sculpture so that it does not cover the entire surface of the base and leaves a few centimeters of space around the work.

  • Sculptures < 50 cm

Many small sculptures will find their place on a 20x20 cm base. A small, narrow, light sculpture with a narrow base will make a very graceful ensemble on a pillar of these dimensions. To have a detailed and optimal view of a small sculpture, choose a base height between 110 cm and 120 cm.

The dimensions of 30x30 cm are often ideal for slightly larger sculptures because the base is wide enough to support a work of art, without cluttering the room in which it is located.

  • Sculptures > 50 < 200 cm

If your sculpture is already large and only requires a base to sit on without being elevated, choose a base large enough to protect and support the sculpture , and relatively close to the ground in order to be able to fully enjoy the work at eye level.

If the sculpture is long, you can opt for a base with the same dimensions (length, width) to offer the illusion of a extension of your work in the height that suits you.

  • Sculptures > 200 cm

For vertical sculptures, it is preferable to opt for a base between 35 and 95 cm high so as not to alter the appreciation of the work.

What to remember for the dimensions of the base:

Prefer a base width slightly larger than the base of your work in order to give it space on the support. The purpose of the base is to support the work without casting a shadow on it. Highlight it as if it were an integral part of the sculpture.

If the work is displayed in a large room with white walls, to create a modern and elegant atmosphere in your room you can opt for high and imposing plinths. In a smaller room, choose a smaller base format, around one meter high.

If your room already has furniture at a height of one meter, choose other plinth sizes to vary the heights and make visiting the room more pleasant.

What type of base should I choose for my sculpture?

The bases exist in different materials, wood, metal, iron, glass, acrylic. So it's a matter of determining which one is best suited to your sculpture. This will mainly depend on the room in which the work will be displayed.

If your style is minimalist, choose harnesses to highlight your sculpture. The harness is modern and discreet. It is perfect for works in iron, bronze or steel.

If you prefer a more rustic style you can opt for natural wood bases. They are more imposing therefore ideal for large sculptures in marble or metal for example.

For an ultra modern style, you can choose a base in acrylic. This type of base can be perfect for showcasing a small sculpture around which you can turn to appreciate the details of the work and the attention to detail of the artist.
